Looky-Loo (horror - Jason Zink, 2025)
Found-footage horror from the POV of an unstable camera obsessive as he progresses from voyeur to murderer.
(80 minutes - Tubi)
- Plot: Even less of one than you'd expect. 1/5
- Cinematography: shot on GoPros. Looks good, especially at night. 3/5
- Editing: Excellent. Held my attention while being basically home movies plus occasional violence. Starts leisurely as he walks from place to place; then a little faster with establishing shots; gets chaotic by the end. 4/4
- Sounds: Several more songs in the credits than I'd realized, so must have been done well. All diegetic music plus a song by Harley Poe that sounds like the Violent Femmes. 3/4
- Dialogue: Barely any aside from overheard snatches of conversation. But it was totally believable. 2/5
- Acting: Realism is where the lack of dialogue pays off. Every character seems like a real person at all times. Maybe not the woman who takes a shower, then carefully puts on knee socks before going to bed. Who does that? 3/5
- Originality: The silent approach is original if nothing else. Interesting choices of which mundane details to film. 3/4
- Style: Nothing that catches the eye, but not generic. Snapshot of a time and place (small cities in the Midwest, indoors and out). 3/4
- Things to see: Nice basement lair. Realistic violence. We see three cats, and they go unharmed. 2/4
- Charm: Not much. Pretty grim. 1/5
So did you like it?
I would rather it was just about a voyeur. That had some tension. The kills don't add anything except to fix it in the genre. 2/5
Objective Total Score: 27/50
