Beacon Point (thriller - Eric Blue, 2016)
Small group of people hiking the Appalachian Trail are led off course by a disgruntled trail guide and weird stuff happens.
(91 minutes - Tubi)
- Plot: Kind of a Blair Witch plot with far less atmosphere. 2/5
- Cinematography: Excellent. Lovely scenery, visible things happening in darkness. 5/5
- Editing: Filmmaking in general is good. Well arranged and constructed. 4/4
- Sounds: Good sound design. Music gets too syrupy when it isn't scary. 3/4
- Dialogue: Not bad but not much there. Characters underwritten, especially the brothers. 3/5
- Acting: All real actors and most have been in things you've heard of. Jon Briddell and Eric Goins are top-notch as the trail guide and the likeable fat guy. 4/5
- Originality: Both folk horror (Native American) and aliens? And mysterious eye imagery? That's something at least. 2/4
- Style: Some memorable weird artifacts. 2/4
- Things to see: In addition to the mysterious eye imagery, before the events begin our protagonist is showing a house with a portrait of an eyeball in the kitchen. And her realty agency has EYE in the name. What does this mean? Who knows. Also the lovely scenery. 2/4
- Charm: Nice collection of characters. Likeable though barely fleshed out. 4/5
So did you like it?
— Looks good, sounds good, well-acted, doesn't make sense, weird symbolism, occasional bad CGI, and it's short. All these things are good. But it's not quite weird enough.
3/5
Objective Total Score: 34/50
